Helping you heat your home more cost-effectively
The energy and cost of living crises are causing a lot of anxiety for people as they worry about how they’re going to be able to afford to heat their homes this winter. Even those who don’t consider themselves to be on a low income are having to make choices on their spending as inflation soars and energy bills rise more rapidly than they have done for years.
There is more to spending less on heating than simply turning the thermostat down and putting on more jumpers. There are various ways that you can minimise energy consumption on heating without compromising on comfort. Electric panel heaters are one such way.
Because electric heaters are now really energy efficient, operate independently (so you can use them differently in each room), and have a range of features and functions that allow you to use them in a more intelligent way they are rapidly becoming a key part of the solution for many. Plus, because they simply need plugging in and require no installation, they are accessible to all.
Because there are many models available, we have put together a guide to some of the best ones, specifically looking at smart heaters and those with ceramic heating elements (as these offer some great efficiencies), that will help you stay warm as well as keep energy consumption down.
WiFi Smart Heaters
You may be aware that smart systems like Nest and Hive on your central heating can be controlled via a smartphone app, but did you realise that many electric heaters use the same technology? This is really a game changer in terms of being able to control your heating much more effectively.
Because it’s so easy to control it from anywhere, you can make your heating work to your schedule, even if that changes every day. While you tend to use gas central heating on fixed timings, with a smart heater you can turn it up or down, control it on a room by room basis, and change it according to your movements that day. It means there’s no need to have it on in an empty house (for example, if you are delayed at work or you go out as a family) and you can even check that you haven’t left it on by mistake (or that the teenagers aren’t turning it up when you’re out!).

Ceramics are commonly considered to be one of the most energy-efficient heating elements available. This is because of how heat conductive the material is. When powered on, it heats up very quickly and then locks this heat inside. It then stops drawing power from the mains and heats the room by releasing its stored heat. It means that it is only consuming energy for a fraction of the time it’s actually on and that’s why it’s so cost-effective to run while still generating plenty of heat (according to the temperature you set as they also have precise thermostats).
