With Mother’s Day just around the corner, many people are racking their brains to think of the perfect present to show their mum the appreciation they deserve. While flowers and chocolates remain popular choices, you do have other options that are a little different and perhaps more thoughtful and considered.
Here are some alternative ideas that may be a little more meaningful:
Inspire a new pass time
If your mum has some free time and could be open to taking up something different, how about a gift that could spark her imagination and set her on a path of a new interest? Perhaps she’s always fancied upcycling furniture, learning a musical instrument, or just wants to get out and about more? The following items are just a few suggestions that could open up new possibilities but we’re sure there are many more you could choose from:
- Tools for DIY/renovation/upcycling projects such as a cordless drill, paint sprayer, or multi-tool
- A musical instrument to learn (either through formal lessons or via online tutorials) such as a guitar, electric keyboard, or ukulele
- A horticulture project such as a growing kit, a book about growing plants, or a specific type of plant to nurture such as a bonsai tree or herb garden starter
- Something to help her get out into the fresh air such as membership to a local rambling club, a metal detector, or a book of local walks
- A means to learn a new language such as a subscription to a learning app or a course of beginner lessons at a local college

Make something
Anyone can go out and buy something but taking the time to make something yourself is really special. What this could be is really down to you and where your skills are. It could be something as simple as making a meal or baking a cake. Perhaps you are good at knitting or crocheting and could craft something? Create a drawing or painting or just make your own card. If you aren’t arty or practical, anyone can put together a photo album (you can do this online to create a photo book) or make up a terrarium. It doesn’t even have to be amazing, it’s the time, effort, and thought that really counts.
The gift of cosiness, sleep, or even pain relief
If your mum doesn’t sleep too well, perhaps because of aches and pains, something that could help her sleep could be the best present of all. Aromatherapy can help in the form of scented candles or pillow spray but something like an electric blanket can be a game changer. Electric blankets can provide the cosy environment needed to settle down into sleep and heat is a natural pain reliever; many people with conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, and other inflammatory diseases swear by them.
Similarly, a heated throw is great for keeping warm and cosy on the sofa on an evening and as well as providing great comfort, can even allow her to turn the central heating down, which could also save her some money.

The gift of your time
Many believe that Mother’s Day is not so much about lavish, expensive presents but more about a token of your appreciation. We think that most mothers would prefer to have some of your time rather than a bottle of perfume or bouquet of flowers so why not organise a trip, a lunch out, or sign up for something you can do together (perhaps one of the learning/hobby ideas from the first item?). This will have a lot more meaning and show your mum that you really care and enjoy spending time with her.
