Smart heating systems, such as Hive and Nest, have several benefits that are widely documented including more controllable heating, the ability to adjust from anywhere, more flexible scheduling, and being able to reduce your energy consumption, which is good for both the environment and your bank balance.
However, while these benefits are certainly very useful, smart heating systems also have many capabilities and advantages that may really surprise you.
It can learn about you
Some smart systems can learn about your requirements by monitoring your usage over time. By detecting patterns (such as how often you have the heating on, for how long, and when), they can start to programme themselves intelligently without you having to do anything! Of course, you can tweak it yourself or even override it.
It can turn on and off for you
Geofencing can be set up on some smart systems so that it pinpoints your exact location in your house (or at least where your phone is). You can set it to notify you when you leave the house to check whether you want to turn the heating off. Likewise, when you’re close to home and the temperature is below the level you usually like, it will ask you if you’d like to turn it up. If you have a smart heater with a WiFi app – like one of our smart panel heaters, for example – you can always just do this yourself from anywhere in the world, provided you have an internet connection.
It can work with your doors and windows
By pairing it with other smart devices, such as window and door sensors, it can detect if there is a draught from an open window or door and notify you to close it. This reduces energy wastage and is also good for home security as well.
It can respond to the weather
Some days the weather can be unseasonably warm or cold. While a standard thermostat will adjust the heating according to the temperature in the room, you can connect a smart system to the weather forecast to allow it to make intelligent adjustments in advance. This could be particularly useful if you’re away during the winter as it could potentially stop your pipes from freezing and causing a flood.
You can create custom commands
Because these systems are so intelligent, you can create your own commands according to different scenarios. Working with other smart devices you can set up instructions such as ‘when I walk through the front door, and it is below a certain temperature, and it is dark, turn the heating to 24° and turn the light on’. You could even connect it to a smart kettle or coffee machine so you could be sipping on a latte or cup of tea within minutes of arrival!

Buy NowIt can increase the value of your home
There is some evidence to suggest that prospective buyers look favourably on houses that are already set up with smart technology including smart heating and smart security measures. This could potentially increase the price they may pay or make your home more appealing over others in the same price bracket. It would also allow you to demonstrate with real data how energy efficient the house is.
