While the UK has never been known for its tropical weather, our summers have been heating up considerably over the last few years. The demand for home and workplace cooling is growing quickly and an air cooler is proving to be a really popular solution.
You’ve already taken the first step by buying an air cooler but there are a few ways you can really maximise its performance. Here are 5 tips to help you get the most from your air cooler:
1. Use natural airflow
Air coolers use the natural airflow of the room so while you would keep windows and doors closed with an air conditioning unit, you should keep them open with an air cooler. Ventilating the room well like this gives the unit access to plenty of natural air. You can maximise the airflow even further by positioning the air cooler close to one of these open doors or windows.
2. Experiment with settings
Most air coolers come with a choice of speed and fan settings. There is no one size fits all recommendation here as it will depend on the temperature that day and even factors such as how many people there are in the room. Experiment with these settings, rather than sticking with the same ones, to see what works best for you on any given day.
3. Control the humidity
Air coolers work best in dry environments so you want to limit the humidity as much as you can. You could go to the lengths of running a dehumidifier alongside the air cooler or go for a more organic approach by having some house plants in the room. Plants are really good at absorbing moisture from the environment and therefore help control humidity. Indoor plants such as yucca, cacti, succulents and aloe vera can work really well, and they also brighten up the room.
4. Ice your water tank
Air coolers have an integral water tank. They take water from this tank which soaks an absorbent pad. The fan then sucks air from the back of the unit, over the water-soaked pad and disperses it around the room. You can make the cooling process more efficient by filling the tank with very cold water. Make it even colder by adding some ice. Some air coolers, such as this one from Mylek, come with ice packs that are designed to go in the water tank, keeping it colder for longer.

In the UK we only usually need air cooling during the spring and summer so it will really help keep your unit in good working condition to store it correctly when you’re not using it over the winter. Clean and thoroughly dry the pad and give the cooler a good clean before packing it away. Cover and store in a clean, dry environment on a level surface. When you get it out in the spring, give it another wipe over and check that no damage has occurred in storage. This will really improve the lifespan of your air cooler.
