A multi-tool is exactly what you would expect from the name – a tool with a multitude of applications, and as such should really feature in everyone’s toolkit whether you’re an enthusiastic amateur or a keen DIYer. A multi-tool is a power tool with various attachments suitable for a variety of jobs. The most common attachments are a universal saw blade, a plunge saw blade, a scraper blade and a base plate for sanding.
Here are 5 common home DIY jobs that can all be done using a multi-tool:
1. Trim a door jamb to make room for new flooring
You know how setting out on one job invariably creates many more? That can be the case when installing new flooring. If it is thicker than the previous flooring, trimming the bottom of a doorjamb is always neater than trying to cut to fit around it. A multi-tool using the circular saw blade makes easy work of this allowing you to slide the new flooring underneath.
2. Cut an opening into a wall surface
If you want to add a socket or electrical junction box into a finished wall, you can do so easily using the multi-tool’s plunge saw blade. Simply trace the shape of the item you’re installing and then cut the opening. It won’t even damage your wall so no need to redecorate.
3. Remove tile grout
Tile grout, especially in bathrooms, can become a bit discoloured and grim-looking, spoiling the look of the whole area. If the tiles themselves are still decent but you want to upgrade the grout, you can just remove the grout without damaging the tiles using a grout blade.
4. Sanding tight spots
There are many types of sander on the market and all will have different advantages. Something like a belt sander is great for large areas like a floor but you won’t be able to get into tight spots such as corners. This is when a multi-tool comes in. Use the detail sanding plate to get into the nooks and crannies to achieve a really neat finish.
5. Scrape away old paint and adhesive
The scraper blade on a multi-tool is great for removing old adhesive under flooring or tiles. You can also use it to scrape away old paint (and then sand it to get a great finish using the sanding plate). Because it’s a neat little attachment, you can easily scrape away the old tile adhesive from under a single tile that’s become loose, enabling to apply a fresh coat and fix it back in place.
When you get your multi-tool you will wonder how you ever managed your home improvement projects without it. Our multi-tool with 48 piece accessory kit is a great example and won’t break the bank either.
