A submersible pump is a really useful tool for draining a variety of bodies of water, quickly and safely. Here is a guide to the various applications for this type of pump.
Flood water
There are few things more damaging to homes than a flood and, if you are unlucky enough to experience this, your best chance of minimising the damage is to drain the water away as quickly as possible. Sluicing out with a bucket, simply won’t cut it. A submersible pump is a great option for getting rid of the water quickly and hygienically. Because it works by being submerged into the water, it will still be useable if the entire space is filled with water and there’s nowhere external to the water to place it. Just make sure you have an appropriate place to redirect the water to outside.
If you live in a known flood-prone area, it is really worthwhile having one ready to use quickly. They’re lightweight and portable so you don’t need a lot of space to store it.

Unfortunately, the water that you need to drain could be backed up from sewage pipes or other dirty water. Thoroughly unpleasant to remove manually, not to mention detrimental to health. Submersible pumps are available in a range of specifications to tackle liquids and solids of different sizes and viscosity. Just make sure the unit you choose is suitable for the job in hand and you should be able to drain even the nastiest of water.
Cellars
Water will always find the lowest point of ingress when levels rise and so it’s quite common for cellars to flood in heavy rainfall or when drains become backed up. A submersible pump works really well in a cellar, again because there may not be anywhere outside of the water to place a pump. A submersible pump can even be used as a proactive measure to prevent cellars flooding. Create a sump pit and leave your submersible pump inside, switched on. It will only start to pump when water collects in the pit and the float switch will turn it off when levels fall too low for the pump to operate safely. This also safeguards it against running dry.
Swimming pools and hot tubs
If you are lucky enough to have a swimming pool or hot tub you will know that regular maintenance is important to keep them running properly and safe to use. While water can be treated to maintain safe levels, periodically you will need to drain away from the water to clean it and start again with a fresh supply. A submersible pump makes light work of this job. While hot tubs do come with drain valves, a pump will do the job in a fraction of the time.

If your pond has become contaminated, or you decide that you no longer want it, getting rid of the water is not as simple as opening a valve, as it is with a hot tub. A submersible pump is therefore a really good solution. You can also use one for areas of the garden that don’t drain properly and have accumulated standing water (note that the depth will need to be greater than 35mm to work).
